Victims identified in deadly Florence train accident

Florence County Coroner Keith Von Lutcken has identified the two men killed in a train accident in Florence County as Bradley Keller Jr., 28, and Jason Mains, 22.

They were walking along the railroad crossing at Howe Springs and Bannockburn roads in Florence County just before 6 p.m. Thursday when they were hit from behind, according to Lutcken.

Lutcken says Keller is from Pennsylvania and Mains from Vermont.

The two were friends and its believed they were walking back from town, according to Lutcken.

He says there was a train on the opposite track headed toward them, and the men were focused on that train.

He says they never realized another train was coming up behind him.

Officials say the Amtrak train was traveling from New York to Savannah.

About 133 people were on the train. They were not hurt.

The railroad crossing was shut down while emergency crews were on the scene, but reopened around 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

The accident is under investigation by CSX, Florence County Coroner's Office and the Florence County Sheriff's Office.
