Firefighters have extinguished a fire that broke out at the Hartsville Sonoco plant Wednesday evening.
Bryan Crowley with the C i ty of Hartsville Fire Department says Hartsville Fire, Darington County Fire and EMS, City of Darlington, and Lake Robinson Rescue crews responded to the fire.
No one was injured.
It took firefighters about four hours to put out the fire, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday, a small fire broke out at the plant on Sonoco Road, according to Hartsville Fire Marshal Bryan Crowley.
Hartsville Mayor Mel Pennington tells us the fire started on a two-story platform deck at Sonoco. Dozens of bails of recycled cardboard are burning. He's not sure what caused the fire, but it is contained.
He says Sonoco's own fire department responded first. Hartsville firefighters were second on the scene.
Because the bails are so dense, they could burn for several more hours. For now, firefighters are dousing them with water.
Hartsville firefighters say they called in several departments in Darlington County to help.
Pennington says in the 1990's there was a fire that started from bails from bails of recycled cardboard. Unlike this fire, it burned for days.
