Two women arrested in I-95 coke bust


Florence County deputies charged Irene Barbosa, 32, of Bronx, New York, and Celia Vergara, 23, of Brooklyn, New York, with Trafficking Cocaine.

Deputies and drug agents stopped the two in a traffic stop in Interstate 95 on June 25.

They found more than 10 kilos (2.2 pounds each) of exceptionally pure powder cocaine and a quantity money in a in a hydraulically operated hidden compartment in the back of the Mercury Mountaineer. Deputies estimate the street value of the cocaine at $1,500,000.

Under South Carolina law, First Offense Trafficking Cocaine (400 grams or more) carries a penalty of not less than 3 years nor more than 10 years in prison, no part of which is subject to suspension or probation and a fine of $25,000.

Barbosa and Vergara are being held at the Florence County Detention Center. Additional federal charges are possible.
