A baby and an adult were killed Thursday afternoon in a crash on Highway 72 about four miles from Lumberton, according to officials with the Raft Swamp Fire Department.

Officials said the crash involved an 18-wheeler and a car, but would not say which vehicles the baby and the adult were in.

A Hazmat team had to be called in to deal with any chemicals the truck was hauling.

Highway 72 was reportedly shut down.

Robeson County Emergency Management has evacuated people living within a quarter of a mile of where the crash happened.

Officials say the Lumbee tribe is allowing one of their community buildings to be used as a shelter.

That building is the Soaring Eagle Community Center at 442 Norment Road in Lumberton.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating what led to the deadly crash.
