Saturday night, police received a call about a man wanted by the Horry County Sheriff's Office, and when they located him, they say they learned he and his passenger carjacked someone earlier in the evening.
Horry County police got a call around 10:30 p.m. that the wanted man was on Primrose Road in the Galivants Ferry area. They pulled over Joey Lyn Phipps, 29, because he had several warrants out for his arrest. Police say Amy Denise Lewis, 36, was also in the car, as well as prescription drugs that weren't prescribed to either Phipps or Lewis.
While at the traffic stop, police say they learned of a carjacking on Highway 701 in Loris. The victim of the carjacking told police he had been in his own car with Phipps and Lewis when the couple began to argue. The victim told police he pulled over at the Country Roads Store on Highway 701 and ordered the couple to get out. The victim said he got out to talk to Phipps and Lewis got behind the wheel and started to drive away. He said Phipps then hit him in the face, jumped in the victim's car and both drove away, hitting a sign on the way out of the parking lot.
Phipps and Lewis are charged with Carjacking, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Malicious Damage to Personal Property.
