Traffic stop leads to drug and weapon charges

Georgetown County deputies arrested Travis Raymark Grate, 30, of Florence for drug and weapon law violations.

Deputies were patrolling the Pawleys Island community when they pulled over Grate for speeding about 4 p.m. Thursday.

They say they saw marijuana in plain view.

When they asked Grate to put his hands on the vehicle, he instead reached into his front right pocket multiple times, according to a press release.

After a brief struggle, deputies subdued Grate and arrested him.

They searched his car and found what appeared to be 0.4 grams of crack cocaine, 4 grams of marijuana, synthetic marijuana, a $50 counterfeit bill, several hundred dollars in cash and a handgun under the driver's seat loaded with a round in the chamber.

A driver's license check revealed Grate was driving under suspension and he was wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service for a probation violation.

Grate is charged with Possession of Marijuana Second Offense, Possession of Cocaine Base Second Offense, Unlawful Possession of Firearm, Speeding and Driving Under Suspension First Offense.

Grate was taken to the Georgetown County Detention Center.
