Townhouse catches fire in Carolina Forest

Investigators say damage was so severe that they cannot determine what started a fire that damaged three townhouses at Sawgrass East Monday in Carolina Forest.

The fire was called in around 5:30 pm.

Horry County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Brian VanAernem says when crews got on scene, heavy flames were seen coming from the building on Sheridan Road.

VanAernem says the fire started on the back patio of one townhouse and moved inside, then it quickly spread to two other townhouses.

"Something that looked like clouds in the back, and I looked out the window and there was a lot of smoke coming this way," said Ronald Hinch who lives in an end townhouse unit.

No people living in the townhouses were injured in the fire.

Firefighters say two dogs were killed, while one dog and one cat were rescued.

Hinch's cat was rescued by Horry County Firefighter Kenneth Bruce. Hinch said he was extremely grateful that Bruce saved his pet.

Conway City Fire and Myrtle Beach Fire were called for mutual aid to help put out the fire.
