Timmonsville names new police chief

Timmonsville town council named Gregory Palmer as the town's new police chief during Tuesday's council meeting.

The town has been without a police chief since last May, when council was forced to dismantle the department due to financial problems.The Florence County Sheriff's Office has provided coverage for the town since the police department shut down.

Palmer will not start work as the town's police chief until a budget is approved.

Council is continuing to work on passing a budget.

Back in January, the Timmonsville town administrator told us they allocated $62,437 to hire three police officers, including a police chief.

Palmer has been in law enforcement since 2001 and has worked at several departments including Timmonsville and Greeleyville in Williamsburg County.
