Timmonsville councilman intends to resign

Timmonsville council member William James will resign from council because he no longer lives in the town limits of Timmonsville.

James said he's been staying in Darlington County for about a month.

He plans to submit his resignation letter to his fellow council members at the December 4 meeting.

James has served on council for the past five years.

"I'm not gonna sit here and hold a position in a town where I'm no longer residing," said James.

James is renovating his home on New Street in Timmonsville, and said he was told by State Municipal Association officials that it's OK for him to be outside the town limits for a few months.

But, he said, someone vandalized the home delaying his move back to Timmonsville.

James isn't sure how much longer the renovation project will take, so he found it best to resign.

"I was born and raised in Timmonsville. I will still do whatever I can for the town of Timmonsville. Unfortunately the situation is what it is."

James says he's also having some medical issues and could use some rest.

"With me having surgery, it's time to look at taking care of me."

James said he's talked with his fellow council members about the situation and they understand his decision to resign.
