Tennessee Highway Patrol captures man who escaped from mental institution

On Friday morning, the Tennessee Highway Patrol apprehended Jason Carter, 39, of Columbia, who is wanted for larceny and for being a fugitive from justice.

Carter escaped a mental institution in Columbia around 10 a.m. on Thursday.

It appears he stole a van from the Craft Farrow State Hospital (S.C.) and later purchased a Chevrolet Lumina, according to a release from the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

South Carolina authorities pinged Carter's cell phone and advised that the suspect may be traveling west on Interstate 40 near exit 182, officials added.

Just before 7 a.m., a trooper observed the suspect vehicle at the Fairview Inn located off of exit 182 from Interstate 40 westbound in Williamson County. Further investigation revealed that the suspect checked in to the hotel at approximately 4:30 a.m. Friday.

Tennessee state troopers on the scene contacted the agency's Special Operations Unit, who arrived and took the suspect into custody without incident at around 9:15 a.m.

Carter was transported to the Williamson County Jail where he will await extradition from South Carolina.
