Teen arrested for trying to strangle 80-year-old

An 80-year-old woman was visiting her husband's grave at Red Hill Cemetery in Mullins Friday when she was nearly strangled, according to Marion County deputies.

She got into her car to leave, and deputies say a 15-year-old hiding the back seat put a power cord around her neck and tried to strangle her.

The woman honked her horn and alerted a man and a woman at the cemetery. The man ran towards the car, and the 15-year-old ran from the car, deputies say.

The man followed the teen and told deputies where he went.

Deputies arrested the 15-year-old and charged him with Attempted Murder.

We can't reveal his identity because of his age.

He's being held in the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.
