Sweepstakes machines seized in Myrtle Beach

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, with help from the Myrtle Beach Police Department, seized internet sweepstakes machines from 5 Star Internet Café Sweepstakes at 706 North Ocean Boulevard Wednesday.

They took 21 computers and cash.

"It is unlawful in South Carolina for any person to keep on his premise or operate any machine used for gambling and requires all equipment used in gambling operations be immediately seized by law enforcement and taken to a magistrate for examination," according to a press release from the Myrtle Beach Police Department.

No arrests were made.

There could be more busts in the future, police say.

Two weeks ago, the city said the businesses were legal.

"We are licensing them. Getting business license from them. Going through all the normal processes. It's not up to our zoning people or our business license people to determine that's an illegal device. The courts need to make that final decision and it's working its way through the court system," Myrtle Beach Spokesman Mark Kruea said in an interview January 4.

Myrtle Beach say state police led the investigation.
