Suspended Chesterfield County Sheriff files to run again

Sam Parker files for re-election.

Suspended Chesterfield County Sheriff Sam Parker filed Thursday for re-election, according to the website of the State Election Commission.

He filed as a Republican and joins five others who have filed to run.

Parker was indicted in March on four counts of Misconduct in Office and two counts of Furnishing Contraband to Inmates.

The state grand jury returned a second indictment against him in August, charging Parker with one count of Embezzlement and one count of Official Misconduct in Office.

The indictment alleges that while he was sheriff, Parker received funds on behalf of Chesterfield County and cashed or deposited them into his personal bank account for his personal use.

Parker has maintained his innocence and intends to fight the charges against him.

His trial is scheduled to begin April 7, at the Chesterfield County Courthouse.
