Substitute teacher accused of assaulting student

Adrian Smith, 38, is charged with Simple Assault Third Degree, according to the Florence County Magistrate's Office.

We're told Smith was a substitute teacher at Wilson High School in Florence when he grabbed a student by the throat area and pushed him down the hall last month.

The warrant says the incident was caught on surveillance video.

WPDE NewsChannel 15 has requested a copy of the video.

Smith is awaiting a bond hearing at the Florence County Detention Center.

As a result of the incident, Florence One district officials say that appropriate disciplinary action, according to the district's personnel policy, was taken against the substitute teacher last month when the incident occurred.
