Squirrel, lightning cause power outages in South Strand

A squirrel and lightning have caused power outages in the southern end of Horry County and northern Georgetown County for Santee Cooper customers, according to spokeswoman Nicole Aiello.

She said 2,067 customers were without power in the Murrells Inlet area for 46 minutes due to a squirrel affecting equipment in a substation. The company has also had sporadic outages affecting much smaller numbers of customers because of lightning.

As of 9:20 p.m. only a handful of people were without power in the Murrells Inlet area according to the company's website.

The website also showed as of 9:20 p.m. 290 people didn't have power on the Grand Strand, most of them in the North Myrtle Beach area.
