      South Carolina ranks 9th in the nation for wildfires

      South Carolina is 9th in the United States for wildfires with 1,337 fires in 2013, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

      The combination of drought, high winds, dry plants and forests has made fire seasons progressively worse over the past 50 years.

      So far in 2014 more than 16,400 fires have burned nearly 300,000 acres of land across the United States, according to the NIFC.

      The top 10 states for the number of wildfires in 2013 are:

      1. California - 9,907

      2. North Carolina - 3,514

      3. Georgia - 2,942

      4. Oregon - 2,848

      5. Arizona - 1,756

      6. Montana - 1,723

      7. Washington - 1,527

      8. Idaho - 1,471

      9. South Carolina - 1,337

      10. Alabama - 1,284
