The SC Ethics Commission is owed nearly $2.5 million in fines from council members, sheriffs, lobbyists, political candidates and committees across South Carolina, according to The State newspaper.
A debtors list from the Commission shows politicians in the Pee Dee and Grand Strand owe nearly $250,000 of those fines.
The fines are a result of paperwork filed late and range from $100 to $194,000.
The Commission sends out reminders to the debtors at the end of the year, before the outstanding debts are sent to the SC Department of Revenue for collection.
The Commission can collect the outstanding fines through garnished wages, tax refunds and liens, according to The State.
