YORK, S.C. (AP) - A woman convicted of killing the former mayor of York more than three years ago is appealing her conviction.
The Herald of Rock Hill reports Julia Phillips is appealing her Sept. 5 murder conviction and life sentence in the strangling death of her former boyfriend Melvin Roberts.
The notice of appeal was filed Monday with the South Carolina Court of Appeals in Columbia.
The 69-year-old Phillips was convicted after an eight-day trial in the death of the 79-year-old attorney.
Phillips was convicted of playing a role in the planning and plot to kill Roberts over trying to get money from his will after he cut off her financially and was going to end their relationship.
Police have not identified Phillips' accomplice.
