COLUMBIA, S.C. -- A legislative committee discussing whether South Carolina should allow the medical use of marijuana is getting ready for its first meeting.
The committee on Wednesday is expected to discuss how South Carolina can implement a law that allows residents suffering from severe epilepsy to use oil derived from marijuana, if approved by a doctor. Non-psychoactive cannabidiol, also known as CBD oil, helps control seizures.
Supporters of the law signed by Gov. Nikki Haley in June said they hoped it was a first step to allowing doctors to prescribe marijuana in South Carolina.
The study committee is led by Republican Sen. Tom Davis of Beaufort and Summerville Republican Rep. Jenny Horne. They were the main sponsors in their chambers of the CBD law. The panel meets at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
