AAA Carolinas says South Carolina drivers have paid the least for gas in the nation for the second year in a row.
The travel organization said the average price for a gallon of gasoline in the state was $3.24 in 2013, 25 cents below the national average of $3.49 a gallon. California had the highest gas prices in the continental U.S. at $3.89 a gallon.
AAA Carolinas says South Carolina also had the lowest gas prices in the nation in 2012 at $3.35.
The state has the lowest gas prices in the nation in large part because South Carolina also has one of the lowest gas taxes in the country. The state's gas tax is just under 17 cents a gallon, unchanged since 1987.
