SC gov threatens veto of helmet restrictions

Motorcycle riders packed the Statehouse lobby and heard Gov. Nikki Haley say she would veto any law requiring them to wear helmets.

The motorcycle rights group ABATE's annual rallies are a fixture of opening days for the Legislature.

Tuesday's rally occurred while a proposal from Greenville Sen. Ralph Anderson would make riders older than 21 wear helmets. The law now requires helmets for people under 21.

Haley told a crowd of more than 150 people gathered outside her office that the measure would be a waste of time because she would veto it.

Haley is a member of the ABATE chapter in Lexington County.

She told the crowd she hoped they would tell legislators to spend time putting more of the state's bureaucracy into a Cabinet agency she controls.
