Rowan sheriff wants more security after escape

The Rowan County sheriff wants more security measures at a magistrate's office after a prisoner escaped.

Sheriff Keven Auten's request comes after a prisoner wiggled out of handcuffs and jumped over a barbed-wire fence. Auten says the county facilities maintenance staff is contacting businesses that specialize in fencing and other security devices.

Twenty-one-year-old Jameel Stephens-Maddox of Spencer escaped Wednesday morning in Salisbury after being arrested for several traffic violations and trying to escape deputies.

Officials say as he was being processed, Stephens-Maddox managed to get both hands out of the cuffs and ran out a door, jumped onto a patrol car and got to the room of the building and jumped the security fence.

The sheriff's office is offering a $1,000 reward for his capture.
