Robeson County schools closing Wednesday for rally

(MGN graphic)

The Public Schools of Robeson County will close Wednesday for the March for Students and Rally for Respect which are two very powerful events to show support for public school students, educators, and public education overall, according to Public Schools of Robeson County Communications Director Tasha Oxendine.

The school district says many teachers and staff are requesting leave on May 16th for the rally and there is a shortage of available substitutes to cover the anticipated teacher absences. "We simply won’t have enough teachers in place to operate schools safely or to ensure a high-quality instructional day for students."

Oxendine released the following statement from Superintendent Dr. Shanita Wooten on the matter:

The Public Schools of Robeson County board members and administration supports its teachers and all staff. We respect the work that builds and strengthens our future, and will continue to support that which advances teaching and learning in Robeson County, this state, nation, and world. While we appreciate the efforts over the past few years by the general assembly to support public education, we recognize there is still much work to be done on behalf of our staff and students. The March for Students and Rally for Respect on May 16th are two very powerful events to show our support for public school students, educators, and public education overall
In an effort to support our educators and ensure quality instruction for our students, The Public Schools of Robeson County will close for students on Wednesday, May 16, 2018. This will be an optional teacher workday to allow those who wish to participate in the rally for public education in Raleigh on May 16th the flexibility to do so. The board, along with administration, made this decision with student safety and instruction in mind. Many teachers and staff are requesting leave on May 16th and there is a shortage of available substitutes to cover the anticipated teacher absences. We simply won’t have enough teachers in place to operate schools safely or to ensure a high-quality instructional day for students.
We acknowledge the district’s closing may create a hardship for some. However, we thank our families and local communities for their continued support of the Public Schools of Robeson County students, teachers and staff members.
