Sealey said the infant girl was taken by EMS from a home on Rennert Road to the Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton this past Friday night in reference to child abuse.

He said the child had bruises on her body and severe injuries.

The little girl was treated and transferred to Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C., and placed on life support. She died the following night.

The child's mother, Shannon Oxendine, said she can't understand why anyone would want to hurt her daughter .

"I'm hurt but I'm just numb. I just don't understand why. I'm just clueless. I didn't get to see her until the machines were doing all the breathing for her," said Oxendine.

Oxendine said she's still waiting to learn more details as to what happened.

She said her daughter was beautiful and precious.

"She was just so happy. She didn't know a stranger. She's always been an angel. She was so lovable," said Oxendine.

Sealey said an autopsy was performed on Scott's body Monday at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Raleigh and the preliminary findings of the autopsy revealed blunt force trauma in the child's death.

Clark is being held without bond at the Robeson County Detention Center.

Police initially reported that the child was 14 months old.
