North Myrtle Beach crews are looking for a 19-year-old man who was surfing near the Cherry Grove Pier.
Crews were called out about 1:15 p.m. Friday.
They found the surfboard Friday afternoon, but the man is still missing.
He is local, according to North Myrtle Beach spokesman Pat Dowling.
A Coast Guard helicopter is searching for the man. North Myrtle Beach beach patrol and North Myrtle Beach rescue boats searched from the Cherry Grove Pier area northward.
The search continued until 8 p.m., Dowling said, though a North Myrtle Beach Fire/Rescue crew will stay along the beach from 8 p.m. until dawn.
In the early morning hours, search and rescue personnel will regroup.
A Coast Guard helicopter out of Charleston searched for the missing man.
Swimmers of any level of expertise should be aware that severe rip currents are occurring inshore and offshore along the Grand Strand. These conditions may remain in effect through Sunday evening or into early next week. We'll let you know when the search resumes.
