Police are investigating the possible connection between a reported kidnapping and a 19-year-old woman's death after a wreck on S.C. 22 earlier this week.

Just after 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Horry County police were called to a crash on S.C. 22 between Highway 905 and Highway 701.

According to a police report, dispatchers told responding Horry County officers that Conway police had a report of a woman being held against her will and that a car reported in connection with that incident, a Silver Honda Accord with Alabama plates, was involved in the crash. Dispatchers also told police that the man inside the car might have a gun.

When police got to the scene, they saw the crashed Honda Accord. Both people who had been inside, a male driver and female passenger, had been taken to the hospital.

The female passenger, 19-year-old Shemeria Smith, died Wednesday morning at the hospital.

Officers said they saw items at the scene that looked like they had been thrown from the car and dispatchers told police that one person had been thrown from the car during the crash.

Police and K9s looked around the scene for the reported firearm, but did not find one.

Horry County officers advised the Highway Patrol Troopers also investigating the crash of "the possible intentional act causing this accident," the report said.
