Remembering beloved 'Big Dave' of Big Dave's Bait and Tackle
Murrells Inlet, S.C. (WPDE) —
The people of Murrells Inlet are remembering their beloved "Big Dave" of Big Dave's Bait and Tackle. David "Big Dave" Altman died suddenly Thursday.
"Most all the local fisherman, we always go to "Big Dave's," said Bubba Love.
Big Dave's Bait and Tackle was a one stop shop for all things fishing.
John Giambeluca, a loyal customer said, "Id go in there every now and again and get some bait from him, very nice guy, very helpful."
Those who knew Altman say no one was a stranger to him, and he treated everyone he met like family.
"He knew his, knew his fishing real well and not being from this area he gave me some really good pointers and they worked so I went back and back and back," Giambeluca said.
Customers said Altman knew money could never buy anyone happiness, so he went out of his way to make sure money was never a problem for those who didn't have it.
"One thing about Big Dave...Big David never had a price. Never had a price. And sometimes we ain't had no money and ah I'll catch you later that just how Big Dave been," said Love.
Altman was known throughout the area, for his acts of kindness and service.
Love said, "you needed stuff for a fishing tournament, he would donate it, he would donate his time."
Missing him will be difficult for many people.
"I want the family to keep on his legacy this is from Bubba, and the local fisherman and the shrimpers, 'we gone miss you buddy'," said Love.
These folks will make sure his big impact is not forgotten.
