The 9th Annual Polar Plunge took place at the Springmaid Beach Resort in Myrtle Beach on Saturday.
Rain, clouds, and 40 degree temperatures greeted around 250 spirited participants who showed up to plunge into the chilly Atlantic Ocean.
These participants consisted of students from area schools, civic clubs, and companies coming together to raise money for the Special Olympics South Carolina.
"Everybody is having fun. It's a warm-hearted kind of event," said Horry County police officer Marcus Rhodes who helps plan the event.
"It's really cold, but it's a wonderful sense of community you feel like you're really contributing. Paying back," said Anna Rhodes, a plunge participant.
This year, more than $40,000 was raised.
