      Race car driver died shortly after finishing race

      John "Big John" Schaak, 54, of Monroe, NC died of an apparent heart attack after finishing his best race ever Saturday night at the Dillon Motor Speedway on Old Race Track Road, according to track owner Ron Barfield.

      Barfield said Schaak finished third out of seven on a 25 mile lap race and was celebrating with his crew in the infield shortly before he collapsed.

      Schaak was taken to the hospital where Barfield says he was pronounced dead.

      According to Barfield, Schaak raced at the track a few times a year and was very excited after his finish Saturday night .

      "He was probably on cloud nine. He was so happy and overjoyed. He was a big supporter of the race track," said Barfield.

      Barfield said the racer will be missed.

      Dillon Motor Speedway and Ron Barfield Family will be putting on a a Special 50/50 drawing and benefit this Saturday Night at Dillon Motor Speedway.

      All money raised will help Schaak's family with funeral and burial expenses.
