A proposal to raise the legal age to buy cigarettes from 18 to 21 was introduced in New York City council last week.
Now some New York state lawmakers are following suit.
A state senator and a state assemblywoman announced the statewide bill at a news conference Sunday.
The city council's speaker Christine Quinn, who's running for mayor, was also there.
She said raising the age to buy tobacco in the city could cut smoking among 18 to 20 year olds by more than 50 percent
