Jury selection started Monday in the trial of Kenneth Jay Britt, 44, of Clio, according to officials with the Fourth Circuit Solicitor's Office.
He's charged with four counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct With A Minor, after officers say he had sex with a 12-year-old girl at his home last March.
Britt also faces a charge of Obstruction of Justice after deputies say he gave a letter to the victim's mother asking her to sign it saying he did nothing to her child.
At the time of Britt's arrest, he was the head pastor at the Clio Church of God.
The South Carolina Church of God suspended him pending the outcome of the investigation.
Court officials say pre-trial matters will be heard Monday afternoon.
Opening statements get underway Tuesday morning.
