Possible drowning victim pulled from ocean by bystanders

Police respond to 71st Avenue N in MB where a man was pulled from the ocean/Whitney Gramling

Just before 7 p.m. Wednesday, people on the beach at 71st Avenue North in Myrtle Beach saw a man with a boogie board far out in the water. A few minutes later, they saw the board closer to shore with no one around it.

Bystanders found the man, who one witness said was face down in the water.

They pulled him to shore, and one of them started CPR.

He was taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The Horry County Coroner's Office says he was a 42-year-old man from Pound, Virginia.

An autopsy will be performed tomorrow to determine his cause of death.

"It's really a frightening thing to see when you see people working so hard to try to revive someone, and they're not successful, and they're trying so hard," said Mary Pearce from Charlotte, NC.

The Coroner's Office says there was another drowning in Horry County Thursday. You can find more information here.
