Police are investigating an early morning fire that destroyed "The Shack" restaurant
formerly known as "The Seafood Shack," on Main Street in Hemingway.
A man walking his dog saw flames coming from the back of the restaurant and called 91
1 around 2:00 Tuesday morning.
When firefighters arrived on scene, the flames had already spread to the roof of the building, according to Hemingway Polic
Chief H. Bryan Todd.
He says crews had to use a backhoe to break down the roof to fight the fire.
Todd says the building was made of cypress wood
and firefighters had a hard time trying to extinguish the flames.
The restaurant has been a popular spot in Hemingway for more than 20 years.
No word on the total damage.
Todd says at this point they can't determine where or how the fire started because of the massive damage.
Hemingway Fire, Johnsonville Fire and Williamsburg County Fire spent more than four hours battling the fire.
