Police say suspect who "swallowed dope" before arrest is in custody

A Conway man has been arrested and charged with Resisting Arrest, Armed Robbery, Attempted Armed Robbery, Driving Under Suspension, and Failure to Stop for a Blue Light, following a police chase Thursday on Highway 378.

George Gray, 31, was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center at 7:30 Thursday night after being released from the hospital.

Gray was wanted for an armed robbery that happened on New Year's Eve at a Conway house on Homewood Road, according to Horry County Police Sergeant Robert Kegler.

A detective spotted Gray on Thursday afternoon at the Wilco gas station on Highway 378 and tried to stop him.

Sgt. Kegler said Gray took off in his car, heading away from Conway on Highway 378.

The chase ended when Gray lost control of his car and wrecked on Liz Lane.

Police said Gray swallowed drugs he had in his possession before being arrested. That is why he was taken to the hospital.

Gray was also one of the suspects in the 2010 murder of Sylvester Smart. Brad Richardson, with the 15th Circuit Solicitor's Office said he is in the process of dropping Gray's murder charge because there isn't sufficient evidence to proceed to trial.
