Police say attempted bank robbery was a misunderstanding

Florence police say what they thought was an attempted bank robbery was actually a misunderstanding.

Around 12:30 Monday afternoon, officers surrounded First Citizens Bank on Second Loop Road.

Police say a teller activated the alarm after a man handed her his cell phone asking her to read a text message.

Officers say she thought he was robbing the bank because the message was about money.

Police won't release any details about the text message but say the man is mentally disabled and was not trying to rob the bank, as initially reported.

He faces no charges.
