Police release name of man shot by Florence County deputy

Tyrone Cornelius Williams, 38, was shot by a Florence County sheriff's deputy after pointing a gun at the deputy, according to Captain Michael Nunn, with the Florence County Sheriff's Office.

Williams has been charged with Possession of Controlled Substance, Pointing and Presenting a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Operating an Unsafe Vehicle, Failure to Stop for Blue Light, and Driving Under Suspension.

An officer tried to stop Williams for a traffic violation at Alligator Road and Whippoorwill Road when he kept going and led deputies on a car chase into the woods, Nunn said.

In order to protect his own life and do what was consistent with his training, the deputy shot Williams, according to Nunn.

Williams was taken to a hospital, but his condition has not been released.

A passenger in Williams' car was released after questioning.

This investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
