CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - A Charleston Police Department officer was shot Saturday night, according to a brief statement from officials.

The officer, whose identity has not been released yet, was taken to Medical University Hospital. According to Police Chief Greg Mullen, the officer "is doing well." The wounded officer was reportedly talking with friends and coworkers.

The officers at the hospital are relaxed, an ABCNews4 crew at MUSC said.

Mullen said the shooting stemmed from a traffic stop. The suspect ran from officers and that's when the shooting happened, he said. According to reports, the shooting happened in West Ashley near Sam Rittenberg and I-526.
