Police chief could start in Timmonsville in one week

Timmonsville council members approved Thursday to allow the new police chief to start after he takes his physical and background check.

They expect he could start in about a week.

Two weeks ago, council hired Gregory Palmer as the town's police chief.

Officials said he's been in law enforcement since 2001. They added

he's worked in Williamsburg and Florence Counties.

Council also approved Palmer's salary, but isn't releasing the amount until after the tow budget is passed.

Earlier this year, council allocated more than $62,000 to reform the police department.

Council dismantled the police force last May due to financial problems.

The Florence County Sheriff's Office has provided coverage for the town in the absence of the police department.
