People in Garden City and Murrells Inlet will have tax referendum to fund dredging

People in Garden City and Murrells Inlet will have tax referendum to fund dredging (WPDE)

The people along the channel between Marlin's Quay and the Garden City Causeway will have a tax referendum to fund dredging in the area.

"The dredging, of course, has to be done because the bottom is coming up because of sand filling in," said Ron Harrelson, who owns a home on the water.

The sand filling in is causing issues for homeowners and fishermen.

"If it's a full moon, low tide, it makes it pretty, pretty hard to get to depending on what boat you're in," said Chris Lawhan, the owner of Marlin's Quay.

The referendum would increase taxes for people along the channel in order to pay for the almost $7 million project. Homeowners and fishermen think this could benefit the area.

"The advantage is...it allows us to boat, even at low tide, also the property value will go back to where it should be," said Harrelson.

"If the houses are rented, the tenants could come out and bring their own boats, which they could come and buy fuel, ice, bait, tackle, that sort of thing," said Lawhan.

The vote will be in April or May.
