It was a somber start to Thursday's Myrtle Beach Pelican's game.
Flags flew at half staff, and there was a moment of silence observed for the death of Leigh Ann Wheeler who was killed after being struck by a car on Business 17 in Murrells Inlet Wednesday evening.
Wheeler is the ex-wife of Pelican's manager Rocket Wheeler. The team's general manager, North Johnson, says the family is in shock after what happened, and the player and coaches are willing to do what they can to help.
He says, "The coaching staff obviously knew her. A lot of us here knew her, so it's one of those situations where we're just trying to let Rocket know that we're here for him, and we'll do whatever we can to help he and Marty and Katie."
52-year-old Leigh Ann Wheeler was killed just after 9:30 as she was leaving a restaurant and walking to a parking lot.
A 19-year-old man from Garden City was driving the car that hit her. No charges have been filed.
