Pelicans celebrate another first half championship

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (40-20) celebrated their Southern Division first half championship in the Carolina League on Saturday night after their 1-0 loss against the Frederick Keys.

The birds clinched the first half championship last week after defeating the Lynchburg Hillcats 9-2.

It's the Pelicans third first half title in 4 years and they will head to the playoffs for the fourth straight season.

The Pelicans lead the Carolina league in homeruns with 53 in 60 games.

Third baseman Joey Gallo was named May's Carolina League Player of the month after batting .326 while hitting 12 home runs and driving in 26 RBIs. "We just wanted to come out here and have fun the home runs are great but the title is the best," says Gallo.

8 Pelicans have been selected as Carolina League All Stars to play in the All Star game in Wilmington, Delware on June 17th. The Texas Rangers top prospect catcher Jorge Alfaro, infielders Preston Beck and Joey Gallo, and outfielder Nick Williams have been named starters. They are joined by outfielder Royce Bolinger and pitchers Alexander Claudio, Andrew Faulkner, and Alex Gonzalez.

"I've never been named to an all-star team last time I made an all-star team was little league or something its an honor," Gonzalez told WPDE NewsChannel 15 after being selected.
