Pee Dee RTA to offer free bus rides to local veterans
Florence County, S.C. (WPDE) —
A local transportation group is set to begin offering free rides for Pee Dee veterans.
The Florence County Veterans Affairs Office said PDRTA will soon begin giving free rides to veterans in need.
Officials said PDRTA wanted to help the veterans because so many of them struggle with inadequate and unreliable transportation.
They said greater mobility is something they can provide, and they plan to do exactly that.
"We have a problem with veterans being able to get to the clinics sometimes. Well, not only will they be able to get to the clinic, but they'll be able to get to their jobs. They can get to any activity that PDRTA provides service to," said Randy Godbold with the Florence Veterans Affairs Office.
Veterans can present their drivers license with the word "veteran" on it, active retired veteran ID card or VA card to be eligible for the free rides.
Godbold said Florence County paid $2,000 for the veterans to ride free from March through June.
Godbold added county officials are hoping to set aside money for the program in next year's budget, thereby enabling them to offer the rides after June as well.
