Pedestrian hit and killed on Highway 501 in Conway

Frederick Steele, 78, from Nevada was hit and killed Thursday night while walking on Highway 501 near Burning Ridge Road, according to Horry County Deputy Coroner Tony Hendrick.

Highway Patrol says Steele was walking north in the southbound lane and was hit by a minivan just before 6 p.m.

He died on the scene.

Troopers say the driver of the minivan was not hurt and will not be charged in the crash.

They say Steele was at fault because he was walking in the lane of traffic.

Hendrick said Steele

was homeless and

had been on the Grand Strand for at least a week.

The cause of death is multiple blunt force trauma due to injuries from the wreck.
