Palmetto Academy breaks ground on new school

The Palmetto Academy of Learning and Success broke ground on a new 45,000 square foot facility in Horry County Friday morning.

The new location is on Fred Nash Boulevard near the Highway 17 Bypass.

The Academy was established as a charter school in 2010.

Classes in the new building are scheduled to begin next August.

State School Superintendent Mick Zais spoke at the ceremony about how he encourages the creation of charter schools.

"I've always been a strong proponent of charter schools and ultimately charter schools are formed from the bottom up, not the top down. If the local community supports the establishment of charter schools, then I will support the local community," Zais said.

After the groundbreaking, Zais also visited three other Horry County schools to discuss successes and challenges facing our schools.
