A 50-foot section of catamaran that was dragged ashore near 6th Avenue North in Surfside Beach Tuesday night was once part of a tri-hull racing yacht, according to Surfside Beach Police Department Investigators.
Charleston's U.S. Coast Guard Station said the Région Aquitaine - Port Médoc was involved in a boating accident in December 2010, off the coast of the Bahamas. The four people on board were rescued, but the boat remained at sea.
A couple living on South Waccamaw Drive saw the boat floating in Murrells Inlet Tuesday afternoon and called 911.
Surfside Beach Public Works crews used heavy tools and equipment to dismantle and remove the catamaran from the beach Wednesday morning for safety reasons.
The Coast Guard said the catamaran was last spotted off the coast of Brunswick, Georgia.
