One killed as tractor trailer hits I-20 overpass in Darlington County

A tractor-trailer hit a bridge pillar on Interstate 20, eastbound at mile-marker 131, in Darlington County just after 8 a.m. Monday.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was killed, according to Corporal Sonny Collins, with the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Tuesday, Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee identified the driver as Diamond J. Hill, 22, of Macon, Georgia.

The tractor-trailer went into the median before striking the bridge pillar, Collins said, but why it did is unclear.

A resident living a mile away from the bridge told WPDE she felt the impact, and it shook her house. The truck is from a company called Werner.

The road overpassing I-20 at that mile-marker is Highway 403, or Oates Highway.

SCDOT engineers are inspecting it because there's concern the impact may have caused structural damage. Oates Highway is open at this time.
