North Carolina man dies after CPR performed on him at beach

Richard Butler, 57, from Laurinburg, North Carolina died Thursday after he washed up on shore near 72nd Avenue North in Myrtle Beach, according to Horry County Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard.

Lifeguards saw Butler about 1:30 p.m. Thursday and performed CPR until EMS arrived.

Butler was taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, where he died.

The Coroner's Office is trying to determine if he drowned or if he died from natural causes.

Willard said Butler has an extensive medical history.

On Thursday, there was a high rip current risk in effect for most of the day.

Willard said Butler died as a result of the combination of a stressful situation in the ocean as well as his medical history.
