Effective immediately vehicles that measure with a noise level of more than 89 decibels when the engine is idle are prohibited in Myrtle Beach.

The noise ordinance amendment passed Tuesday by Myrtle Beach city council changes the level from the original 87 decibels.

A violation can result in up to 30 days in jail or $500 in fines.

Also Tuesday, council delayed enforcement of other new ordinances in Myrtle Beach such as the bar closing time, curfew and helmet law to February 28, 2009.
