The installation of a third lane heading inland on Highway 501 between Waccamaw Pines Drive and Gardner Lacy Road could be complete by Monday, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
SCDOT official Anna Levy said crews were hoping the lane would be open today, but the rain slowed them down. She said the area got more than 3 and a half inches Thursday, making it difficult for crews to complete last-minute touchups like painting. She said the decision to postpone the opening until Monday was also made for safety reasons.
Officials say it could be 4 or 5 years before we see any work begin on the beach bound lanes.
