New details in death of 3-year-old Bennettsville girl

Edna Trinity Hunt

In October, NewsChannel 15 requested information from the South Carolina Department of Social Services through the Freedom of Information Act in reference to the death of Edna Trinity Hunt, 3.

They've sent a response to some of our questions.

We asked DSS officials if social workers in Marlboro County were investigating allegations of child abuse before Edna died.

Officials now tell us they did conduct a child protective services investigation prior to Hunt's death, but they won't release any specifics about that investigation.

In October, Hunt died following cardiac arrest in Marlboro County.

Marlboro County Coroner Tim Brown says he can't release findings from a preliminary autopsy report in Hunt's death, but Brown says he will release information from the final report when it's done.

Hunt's mother and her mother's boyfriend are charged with homicide by child abuse.

DSS says the family had been living in North Carolina and social workers there were investigating her mother on suspicion of child abuse.

We contacted social workers in North Carolina to get details on their investigation, but they didn't release any information.

DSS officials now tell us that investigation was not transferred to social workers in Marlboro County, when the child and her mother moved to Bennettsville.

We reported in October that the social workers assigned to Hunt's case in Marlboro County had been placed on suspension.

DSS officials did not respond to our request for information on the status of those workers.
